Imagine starting school in a new country where you don’t speak or understand the language. It’s impossible to realize the frustration and difficulties students in this situation have comprehending lessons while trying to master a new language. Thanks to a grant from the Thornapple Area Enrichment Foundation, some TK students will get a little help as they make the transition to new homes, new schools and a new language.

Middle School 7th grade students sat under the stars inside a large portable dome inflated right in their own gymnasium. The dome, called the Digital Star Lab, is part of Kalamazoo's Air Zoo. The unique experience gave students a chance to see stars, moons, planets, and the galaxy up close.

Thornapple Kellogg Middle School students bring “Annie Jr.” to the stage for two public performances Nov. 20 and 21. Both shows start at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The shows are free to the community. Donations are appreciated to help maintain the middle school theater program.

TK bragging rights are one the line in the annual Battle of the Buildings Nov. 13. Members from each building within the district will compete in fun (and sometimes goofy) basketball competitions.

Water, water everywhere! In Michigan we are surrounded by water with an abundance of natural lakes, streams and ponds so sometimes it’s hard to realize there are people in the world who don’t have quick and easy access to safe water.  Where does our water come from and how does it safely get into our homes and schools and businesses?  What happens if our water supply is no longer safe? What happens if we don’t have access to good water?

Middle School teachers and students have found a program called "TrueSuccess" and it lives up to its name. TKMS Assistant Principal Lyndsey Fischer said the program is all about building relationships between teachers and students and letting them talk about real-life situations. The program is focused around the nine virtues of respect, responsibility, self-control, gratitude, encouragement, compassion, grit and courage. It works by rewarding positive behavior.

For many, Memorial Day marks the start of summer and a long weekend to spend with family and friends. But the real meaning of Memorial Day is much more than all that. Memorial Day is the most somber of holidays for Americans. It is a day to remember and honor those service men and women who paid the ultimate price and died while serving in active duty for this country.
